Living expenses

The cost of living in Denmark is fairly high, but living expenses will of course vary according to personal requirements and standards. We have gathered estimates, tips, and tricks on living expenses in Denmark.

Danish Valuta

In Denmark we have our own currency, which is counted in kroner and ører. Kroner is usually abbreviated as 'kr.' in danish and 'DKK' in english. 1 kr. is equal to 100 ører. Coins are in denominations of 50 ører, 1 kr., 2 kr., 5 kr., 10 kr. and 20 kr. Notes are in denominations of 50 kr., 100 kr., 200 kr., 500 kr. and 1.000 kr.

1 Euro equals approximately 7,50 DKK. And 1 Dollar equals approximately 7,00 DKK. Read more about exchange rates here.

The 1.000 kr. note will no longer be valid after May 31st, 2025.

Housing expenses

Housing is generally cheaper in Kolding than the bigger cities in Denmark. You can find student housing as low as 1.900 DKK excluding utillities at StudentKolding.

On average a room in a shared apartment or a student apartment cost around 2.500 – 3.500 DKK.

Campus Sport is a student-run association offering a wide range of fun weekly activities for students in Kolding. All members pay a basic fee of 25 DKK per semester, providing access to a variety of discounts and benefits for students in Kolding.

Grocery expenses

The basic food expenses vary between 1.000 – 2.400 DKK per month, depending of where you shop and which items you shop.

You can find several shopping facilities for your daily needs in Kolding. For groceries, there are Føtex, Lidl (low-price), Meny, Netto (low-price), REMA1000 (low-price), Spar, SuperBrugsen, and 365discount (low-price)

In the northern part of Kolding you will find the shopping mall Kolding Storcenter, which also accommodates the discount store Bilka.

All the shops have daily and weekly offers where you can find some good deals and save money. You can find the deal at their webpage, app or in the shop.

By the end of the day, all the supermarkets cut the price of the bakery goods they can’t sell the following day. You can download the app TooGoodToGo, where several supermarkets and restaurants are selling the surplus food by the end of the day at a fraction of the price.

Going out in Kolding

The prices for going out are often quite expensive in Denmark. A meal costs approximately 120 DKK, a beer 30 DKK and a bottle of wine between 100 and 200 DKK, again of course varying according to personal standards.

Luckily Kolding has some student friendly food and drinking places where the cost is lower than average, where you can find bottle beer for 20 DKK and get a meal for under 100 DKK. And your student bar has even better prizes.
